FAQ's

For spills, quickly blot with a damp cloth to prevent moisture from entering cracks. Vacuum or sweep bi-weekly, using a soft cover on a central vacuum to avoid scratches. Clean monthly with a Premium Hardwood Cleaner.

Why choose wood flooring?

Hardwood flooring has a natural beauty that can provide a home with a warm feeling. With minimal maintenance, hardwood floors can last as long as 100 years. Keeping them clean and new is a breeze, requiring minimal effort. Unlike carpet, hardwood floors do not stain when spills happen – even with coffee or wine. Additionally, hardwood floors offer health benefits for some people with allergies. Dust mites thrive in carpeting where dirt and pollen build up in the thick piles. Even with vacuuming and shampooing, these hazards can never be completely eliminated from the carpet. With its smooth surface, dust and pollen are easily cleaned off wood flooring surfaces and cannot get trapped. Added to the fact that there are hundreds of styles and wood species to pick from, installing hardwood flooring will actually add resale value to a home.

What type of wood floor is right for my home?

Choosing the right type of wood floor depends on the physical space (house, condo, floor level, etc.), as well as budget and personal tastes.

What amount of wood floorboards do I need to purchase?

Wood flooring is sold by the square foot, which is the measurement of the area to be covered by the floorboards. A "waste factor" of 5% should be included in the amount of square footage of flooring needed to allow for cutting waste. For instance, a ten ′ x 10′ room equals 100 sq. ft. 5% of 100 is 5, so it is necessary to purchase 105 sq. ft. to have enough flooring. The cutting waste also allows for small imperfections in the wood to be cut out.

What do I need to do to maintain my wood flooring once installed?

For spills and spots, it is best to use a damp cloth to blot them up and wipe them away. The quicker this is done, the better, as the objective is to stop moisture from getting into the cracks between the boards. For general maintenance, vacuum or sweep the floor on a bi-weekly basis. If using a central vacuum, use a soft cover wrapped around the hose to minimize scratching the floor surface. On a monthly basis, clean the floor with a Premium Hardwood Cleaner.

How can I minimize the expansion and contraction of my floor?

To help the floor stay in place, regulate the home's humidity to a level between 45% and 55%. This easy step will increase the longevity of the floor and also make the home environment more comfortable.

What can cause damage to my hardwood floors?

The most common reason for damage to hardwood floors is liquid spills and water that are not cleaned up quickly. Leaving liquid spills on hardwood floors will eventually seep down into the floor between the boards. This will result in warping of the wood, which may lead to cracks or splinters. Shoes can be worn on hardwood floors, but they should be clean and free from sand or grit. High heels can be worn, but make sure they are in good condition. Any exposed metal on the heel will cause damage to the floor. Avoid using oil-based cleaners, waxes, or polishes, as these products can harm the surface of the floor. Ammonia-based cleaning products are too abrasive for hardwood floors and can cause the finish to be dulled.
