How to Use a Ladder Safely

A ladder is one of the most precarious tools when used incorrectly. However, there are ways to minimize risks while using ladders to perform household repairs and tasks. Follow these tips to ensure proper ladder safety and peace of mind.

Basic tool safety tips

Don't use ladders when tired or dizzy. Never use ladders outside during storms or strong winds. Hazardous weather conditions increase the risk of losing balance, falling, and suffering an injury. Also, wear slip-resistant footwear. Leather soles are often considered unsuitable for climbing ladders, as they can slip on wet surfaces.

Before using a ladder, inspect it for any faults, breaks, or defects. A damaged ladder is much more likely to fail and cause potentially severe injuries.

Keep only one person on the ladder

Ladder safety mandates that only one person use it at any given time. Two people can significantly shift the ladder's center of balance. Trestle ladders are an exception since they're designed for two workers at a time.

Utilize the three-point contact

When climbing up or down a ladder, it's often best to keep three points of contact with it. Two hands and a foot at all times can prevent most falls and keep users safe. Avoid holding anything while climbing since it prohibits getting a firm grip on the ladder.

When on the ladder, avoid reaching too far. This action can shift the weight from the ladder and make it fall.

Use the four-to-one placement rule

When placing a ladder against a wall, put the base a foot away for every four feet of height needed. For example, if the top of the ladder is 12 feet high, it should stand three feet away from the wall.

Watch out for any doors

When using ladders, be careful not to block any doors that swing in the ladder's direction. Alternatively, lock the doors, guard them, or block them entirely.

Don't go all the way to the top

Most ladders aren't designed to be climbed all the way up. The top two steps should be off-limits as they are further from the center of balance. The safest place to work on the ladder is near the middle.

Never move a ladder while standing on it

This might sound obvious, but it must be repeated. Don't move a ladder while someone is climbing it. It is incredibly dangerous and can lead to severe injuries.

When you need to do something that requires a ladder, keep these tips in mind to stay safe. Alternatively, call a professional home service to do the job with minimal risk and maximum reliability.
