Should I Replace or Repair My Wood Fence?

Deciding whether to repair or replace your wood fence shouldn’t be hard work. With routine maintenance and upkeep, most wooden fences should last years and not need to be replaced. Though there are some tell-tale signs your fence needs repair or replacement. Here is a quick guide to answer when to repair your fence or install a new one.

Discoloration

Discoloration is a usual sign of stress on your fence. If you see that the fence is becoming yellowed or gray, you can repair it by sealing it or repainting it. Be sure to maintain your wood fence each year; otherwise, you’ll be looking at a full replacement and an eyesore for yourself and your neighbors.

Small holes or cracks

Most tiny cracks and splintering can be fixed with a repair. This can be done by a professional or via DIY. Use putty or wood filler to repair your wood fence cracks or holes. Replace damaged wood boards, posts, or panels. Then paint to keep the fence looking uniform.

Painting a fence should be done every two to three years while resealing should be done as often as you see the water soaking through the wood instead of beading on the posts. A good rule of thumb is once a year in humid climates and a little less often in drier climates.

Rotting Fence

Initial signs of rot can often be found at ground level. A repair can be performed on a newly rotting fence. A common rule of thumb is that once it gets beyond a quarter of the fence boards, you should install a new fence. This is when the rot is substantial and will likely be more costly to try to repair than just replacing.

Termites

Termite and other insect damage go much deeper than most people expect. We tend to find it best to have it professionally looked at and, nine times out of ten, you’re looking at the need for a new fence.

Vehicular or Tree Damage

Any extreme damage will likely result in new wooden fence installation. Unfortunately, once the boards are broken, crushed, warped, or leaning pretty severely, the job is beyond repair.

Past its life expectancy

We love helping our customers out with fence repair, yet sometimes it’s just time to get a new fence. Average fence life expectancy for spruce is 5 to 7 years, 6 to 12 years for pine fences, and between 20 and 30 years for cedar. Treated lumber can last over 20 years. So if your wood fence is beyond or close to its usual lifespan, you should start looking into new fence options.

Wood fences are a great value add and curb appeal for any residence. There shouldn’t be tons of guesswork when it comes to deciding when to budget for repair or a full-on replacement.
