The Different Kinds of Shower Heads

When upgrading the bathroom, a homeowner has many fixtures and design functions from which to choose. For example, by switching out the showerhead in your bathroom, you can create the shower of your dreams. Similarly, putting in a less-than-great shower head can make bathing much less luxurious. The most common features to consider when choosing a new shower head are cost, the shower size or height, desired water pressure, conservation needs, installation, and individual bathing habits. We’ve compiled a list of the nine most common showerheads and detailed their specifications here:

Standard-fixed shower head

This type of shower head is the most common found in American households. The standard fixed shower head, or wall mount head, is inexpensive and easy to install and maintain. Though the parts are affordable, there are options to increase comfort and luxury with the standard shower head by purchasing one with a multi-function spray.

Detachable handheld shower head

Growing in popularity, the handheld showerhead can be removed from the wall mount and used to spray those hard-to-get places, and it is also great for bathtime or hosing off pets. With a flexible metal or plastic hose, detachable shower heads are cost-effective and durable. They do require a specific wall mount, so that adds a little extra to the installation cost. However, these are worth it for busy, growing families.

Dual shower head

The dual shower head is a combination of the standard showerhead and the handheld showerhead. One showerhead is fixed to the wall mount, and the other is a detachable unit that can be removed from the wall. Dual shower heads are luxurious and versatile but also tend to be on the expensive side. However, dual shower heads add value to a bathroom and will net a significant return upon selling a home.

Filtered shower head

The filtered shower head is an excellent option in areas with hard water. Filtering the water before it streams out, this showerhead removes impurities from your bathing experience but requires more upkeep than the alternatives. However, if your home has a hard water problem, a filtered showerhead may be worth it.

Eco-shower head

Also known as a low-flow shower head, the eco-showerhead is designed for maximum water efficiency. People with this kind of fixture experience lower water bills and a lessened impact on the environment. Consult with a licensed plumber before purchasing to ensure you get the best type to optimize your savings and showering comfort.

Rain showerhead

Rainfall or waterfall shower heads are usually mounted from the ceiling and range from six to twelve inches in size. Rainshower heads are meant to provide a gentle, deluxe showering sensation. Unfortunately, these lack water efficiency and are not usually the option if you’re looking for the most eco-friendly option. Then again, the feeling of a natural waterfall pouring down on your head each morning may have you contemplating other ways to save the planet.

LED shower head

LED stands for light-emitting diode. While that sounds super intense, the homeowner that adds an LED shower head is interested in making bath time more fun. Various colors shining from the showerhead will have anyone grooving and shaking during their scrub down.

Massage shower head

For those looking for the utmost relaxation during their daily wash, opt for the massage shower head. It uses high-pressure streams to provide the feeling of a massage. Keep in mind that dual shower heads and standard showers have massage settings, so choosing one of those may make more sense if their other features are more fitting to your bathing style.

Shower panel

Shower panels are all the craze in new homes. With a futuristic design, they provide temperature control, different water settings, and many of the features you find in all of the shower heads combined. Check out the best-selling Ello & Allo Stainless Steel Shower Panel here.

We tend to see most people deciding between rainfall, eco-friendly, or the dual shower head. If budget matters, there are plenty of standard-fixed showerheads that have eco-settings and can still provide the excellent downpour that you and your family require. So, which shower head is the best? Honestly, that’s up to you.
